A shocking incident occurred Wednesday evening in the Bronx, New York City, when a burning commercial van erupted in a massive explosion, injuring seven members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). The blast, which occurred near Fox Street and Westchester Avenue around 7:13 p.m., sent a huge fireball and thick plumes of smoke multiple stories into the air, with the dramatic event captured on video by social media users.

Firefighters Sustain Serious Burns

FDNY Chief John Esposito confirmed in a news conference that seven firefighters were injured while battling the initial blaze. Three of the injured were admitted to the trauma and burn center at Jacobi Hospital, having sustained serious burns, primarily to their hands and faces.

"Our firefighters are awake, alert and speaking, but they have some serious burns, and we'll be praying for them," Chief Esposito said, noting that all seven are expected to recover despite the serious nature of their injuries.

The presence of multiple smaller explosions, accompanying the main fireball with sharp popping sounds and electrical sparks, suggests the van may have contained volatile materials or gas cylinders, which contributed to the intensity and danger of the blast.

Investigation Underway

The fire was brought under control roughly an hour later, but the aftermath left debris scattered across the residential and commercial street. Authorities have confirmed that the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Incidents involving unexpected secondary explosions pose a significant risk to first responders. This event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers FDNY personnel face daily, particularly when dealing with vehicle fires where the contents of a commercial or personal vehicle are unknown.
