The long-awaited return of Rick and Evelyn O'Connell is finally underway. Multiple reports indicate that Oscar winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to reprise their iconic roles for The Mummy 4, with the horror filmmaking duo Radio Silence attached to direct.
The project is being developed as a direct continuation of the classic 1999 film The Mummy and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns. Crucially, sources suggest the new film will intentionally disregard the events of the third installment, 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. This would mark a creative move to restore the original trilogy's narrative, as Weisz famously did not return for the third film, where her character was recast with Maria Bello.
Radio Silence, the team comprised of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, is set to take the helm. Known for their successful reboots of the Scream franchise and the critically praised horror-comedy Ready or Not, their involvement signals a potential shift toward a more action-horror tone that defined the original movies.
The new sequel is written by David Coggeshall and will be produced by original franchise steward Sean Daniel, alongside Project X Entertainment. Universal Pictures is banking on the nostalgic excitement surrounding the return of Fraser, whose recent career resurgence culminated in an Academy Award win for The Whale, and Weisz, who won an Oscar for The Constant Gardener.
This news comes after Universal's prior attempt to launch a shared "Dark Universe" franchise failed with the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise, underscoring the studio's realization that the enduring magic of The Mummy lies firmly with the chemistry of its original stars, Fraser and Weisz. Fans are now eagerly awaiting the official confirmation of the O'Connell family's next adventure.
